Law and Murder Washington Vampires Magical Washington Volume 2 Mindy Klasky 9781611386585 Books

I loved Fright Court Book 1; Book 2 follows it up better than I would have believed. Ms. Klasky provides us with an appealing heroine of a species that we haven't seen a lot of--a sphinx, descendant of Sekhmet. She shows a marvelous understanding of Sekhmet's nature and ties Sekhmet, vampires, sphinxes and other paranormal species together in unexpected ways. There are other strong characters in this book as well and character development is definitely one of Ms. Klasky's strong suits. The plot is interesting, fast moving, internally logical and sometimes surprising. While some old traditions are kept,(such as the aversion of vampires to sun), she doesn't hesitate to tie things together in new ways, and there isn't a cliche in sight. At the risk of sounding trite myself, I can't wait to see what happens in book three!

Law and Murder Washington Vampires Magical Washington Volume 2 Mindy Klasky 9781611386585 Books Reviews

I read a lot of paranormal mysteries and \ or romance. This was a different take. It was quite interesting and entertaining. I read the first book in the series the Mayhem, Murder, and Mystery boxset. So I was intrigued enough to read the rest of the series. Very enjoyable .
Now I will not so patiently wait for another Fright Court book! This story had a good ending but left me wanting another book in this series. I love all the characters and want to see how they all fit in to the rest of Sarah's life. There was plenty of character interaction, great action and intrigue and descriptive narration...and I want more.
This second novel really needs to be read after the first for full understanding. It is thoroughly engaging, but he seemed as if it changed gears in th middle. From the question of her ability to testify at the trial of a notorious paranormal criminal to a series of macabre sacrifices, the link never makes it back to the trial. Perhaps it will be taken up in the next volume. I look forward to it.
I absolutely devoured the first book, Fright Court, and book two is even better! Sarah has a strong voice in the books and her reactions are completely believable considering the craziness of her life. It's really interesting to see Sarah trying to navigate what is basically a foreign culture to her, identifying with parts of it, but rejecting aspects that seem taken for granted by other Sphinxes. I LOVE the references to ancient cultures and the imagery she provokes of the goddess Sekhmet really brings her to life. That was definitely my favorite part of the book and gives it that extra "something." I cannot wait to see where our heroine finds herself next! More please!

Disclaimer My review is for an advanced reading copy.
Good light paranormal romance. My main gripe is occasional discrepancies. In the last book a thumb drive containing the location of several imperial sanctums was stolen. In this one vampires never reveal their sanctums ever. Including, apparently, the vampire whose sanctum was burned down in the last book because its location was store on an encrypted thumb drive with three others. Other tgan that I enjoyed the book.
This second installment from Ms. Klasky's newest supernatural series did not disappoint, in fact I stayed up too late to finish it (always a good sign to me). I have read most of this author's books and I truly enjoy how well she crafts characters as well as the plot twists and quirky bits in her world-building. Sarah is a character driven by personality traits I don't share yet I find her delightful and her story engrossing. Her two love interests are both appealing and unusually for me, I'm not sure which I would prefer for her. I was particularly taken with some of the passages describing Sarah's spiritual journeys into a distant past that were part of her training as a supernatural Sphinx. The mystery of her unique nature continues to unfold and I can't wait to learn more in the next book. Full disclosure I read a free advance copy but my review is voluntary and honest (and I would have bought the book anyway).
As a follow up to the first in the series, this is a good book, but it does have a few drawbacks. The first is that the story is -- somehow -- incomplete. I don't mean the overall story of the series but of this one book. There is plenty of room for the continuation to another book and this is one I am hoping will be the case. But the story itself has a lot of just leftover pieces that aren't neatly wrapped up. Maybe I'm asking too much from this book especially if it is the authors intent to publish another in the series but I wish there was just a little more flesh -- pun somewhat intended -- to this book. However, it is a good continuation to the first book. The other thing that was odd about this was the pacing. It started out fast, then slowed down to basically a crawl and then everything came to a head in the last few pages. I'm not sure I'm a fan of this type of pacing but it is a bit different than the start slow, finish fast methodology. I would recommend it to anyone who has read the first of the series.
