The Loon Michaelbrent Collings 9781460990759 Books

I found "The Loon" a bit difficult to read due to the many editing errors, misspellings, punctuation errors, format problems and just plain language use errors which could have been taken care of by a good editor. One of the things so many Indie authors have not yet come to understand. Mr. Collings you are a writer, a good one, but you are not an editor and you need one.

The story itself was good, interesting, unusual and filled with characters that are believable, well portrayed and complex. The premise is interesting and well done. The horror builds slowly as each character moves inevitably toward his fate. It is realist and frightening. A book I preferred to read during the daylight. This story is not for the faint of heart.

If you like your horror with a great deal of violence, malevolence with a scare and creep factor at the top of the scale this is the book for you.

The Loon Michaelbrent Collings 9781460990759 Books Reviews

This book never stopped!!! Several surprising turns and twist. Living in Wisconsin, I could feel the wind, snow and cold which barricaded all the terror inside the Loon. The crazies in the Loon make Hannibal Lecter look like a kindergarten teacher. Did I mention the creature, science project gone wrong?
This was a really great, well-written thriller that kept my attention and had me doing the "just one more chapter" thing for hours late into the night! Fortunately, the chapters were quite short, in a writing style that worked well with this story. I would have given this 5 stars, save for a few problems the typos were distracting and annoying, which is my main complaint. I don't recall seeing many errors in the first half of the book, but they seemed to jump out at me during the second half -- I actually found myself wondering if the editor got tired and his or her attention lagged! There weren't misspellings; rather, a completely incorrect word would be used in a sentence. For example "she nodded minutely," when the word was supposed to be "mutely." Also, at a place where the storyline was in a guard's head, he switched from being one guy to another right in the same paragraph. (I think Mitchell became Darryl.) Also, Dr. Wiseman became Dr. Whiteman at one point. It's just distracting.

The unique writing style of the prologue nearly made me discard the book -- I didn't care for it at all. But I try to give things more of a shot than that, and I'm glad I did, because the story was excellent!

Lastly, I think that the novel could have used somewhat more in-depth character development. That of the protagonist and the woman were basically ok, but others could have benefited from being more fully developed.

My second and third points are suggestions; no "stars deducted" for those! But the typos definitely merited decreasing my rating from 5 stars to 4. Someone needs to pay a little more attention during editing! Otherwise, I quite enjoyed the story, and look forward to reading more from this author, as well as recommending him to friends.
Let's see...this book started out well, promising even, but quickly went downhill. I'm an avid fan of the horror genre and this was just plain silly. A monster that is described as meat and is somehow an iteration of a past inmate? The characters were cliche and bland. The plot, while having moments of clarity, was hurried, muddled and uninteresting. I didn't connect with any of them because none of them were developed enough for me to care about. Don't get me started on the typos!! There were so many it was distracting and it became a game of mine to find them as I read so that I wasn't bored out of my mind. I'm not one to give up on a book and powered through this one, but almost wish I hadn't bothered.
Need a tranq gun - for MYSELF! I've read several of Collings' books, but I suspect this one will have me keeping a nightlight on. IT'S A NIGHTMARE! The story, not the book itself. It isn't often I read something that gets my heart pounding - and keeps it pounding - but this one did it. You gottta wonder what kind of dreams this author has - maybe nightmares as I'm sure I'm soon to have.
I'm not really a big fan of horror novels but this one was quite fun for me. There was always something going on and lots of characters that the reader could get to know and actually care about. Unfortunately, in this book you don't want to get too attached to anybody. A lot of likable characters won't be available if the author ever writes a sequel. That being said, the story was interesting if improbable. The characters were nicely written. It was a horror story so it won't get five stars from me, but four is a good rating. I would read more from this author for sure.
This is a very decent thriller. I read it months ago and it's still stuck with me. It had great, memorable characters, an interesting story, and well-paced suspense.

It is not purely a thriller though. It has weird, sci fi creature elements too. I really enjoyed it! It kind of reminded me of Preston and Child's Relic.

I originally wanted to give this four stars, but I couldn't think of any flaws. I highly recommend this one!

Also, I think the author has a very unique style. Particularly in the opening passage. This really makes a book stand out to me and it deserves five stars for that.

I wanted to also mention that the audiobook was excellently done. I used the whispersync option.
